Terrene is a vast world with a deep, disparate history. Forgotten empires have risen only to collapse to ruin. Great nations of the past have faded away where the names of them are only rumors and myth. The Gods walk the earth, barred from their divine realm eons ago during the Locking - a battle between the Cabal and High Host. Strange, unique races co-exist as friends or battle as mortal enemies.
Progenytakes place mostly in the southern regions of the Oaken Duchies, a nation made up of ten distinct duchies, each ruled by a Duke or Duchess.
A hundred years passed from the time of the Demonic War, and most of the populace that had been alive had passed on – certainly all of the race of men had – taking with them the memory of how essential the White Lions had been in defeating No’ra’sim. The anti-magic movement had spread like a creeping mold from the Red Peaks outward into the Duchies, causing much of the public to fear and distrust any magic users. A series of tragedies where thousands of people lost their lives along the northeastern coast near Carinius seemed to be magical in nature, and some of the local citizenry claimed to have witnessed some of the White Lions in the area at the time. Accusations flew that they had been responsible and were planning to make a move to take over the Duchies, declaring themselves supreme rulers.
The leaders of each duchy convened in Freehaven in a rare meeting where all of the dukes and duchesses themselves attended the Council and did not rely on their representative to relay their interests. A week of debates resulted in seven of the rulers voting to outlaw all magic use within the borders of the Oaken Duchies. Anti-magic fervor had not permeated the southern duchies and the colony as much as the northern and central regions; Duke Falius of the Southlands, Duke Traynes of the Marshlands and the Duchess Lia of the Colonial Duchy in Halawala all voted against the law, arguing that magic itself was not the problem, but the intent of those using it. Nonetheless, panic and fear ruled the day and the measure passed.
Magic was forbidden in any form in the Oaken Duchies.
As part of the newly enacted law, a national organization was created, The Office of the Constable, and tasked with tracking down any magic user in the Duchies, taking them into custody. Offenders were told they would be allowed to leave the country to live out their lives elsewhere. Schools and colleges of magical study in the nation were torn down, texts were burned, and the teachers and students detained. Initially, the mages peacefully submitted to the authority of the Constables, believing that reason and sanity would return and the law would be reversed or being content to move to another part of the world to pursue their arcane studies.
Rumor spread that those taken into custody were being executed instead of relocated elsewhere and the few remaining magic users went into hiding or scattered across Terrene if they could escape the Constables.
